ReQIP contamination value chart

Specific contaminants have varying impacts on the suitability of a material for recycling and the market value of this recyclate. The Recycling Information Point (ReQIP) has compiled data from end users to produce the contamination value chart below.

This chart provides information to collectors to gauge the effect individual cross contaminants have on the market value of each type of recyclate. A grading system has been provided that distinguishes between six levels. This ranges from recyclates which can be reasonably mixed together without impacting on price to those recyclates that when mixed together in any notable proportions will lead to rejection by reprocessors.

The percentage contamination level for each contaminant is also identified in the chart, which is drawn from the Quality Specifications. However, it must be emphasised that the sum of all these levels must not exceed the ‘overall contamination level’ given for each raw material. This can be found by ‘hovering’ your mouse’s ‘curser’ over the raw material heading on the left hand side of the chart. Other useful information is also given about each material, when you do this.

In addition, the chart also provides advice for collectors about considerations that should be taken on board when rolling out a collection scheme for specific recyclables.

As part of the ReQIP project the Resource Association has also published general Quality Specifications for most recyclable materials.

If you would like a print friendly version of the End User Contamination Value Chart chart, then please email info@resourceassociation.com

The Resource Association would like to stress to those selling raw materials to end users, that the chart does not replace the need to speak to their reprocessors to confirm their Quality Specification and what impact each contaminant has on prices; as these will vary per reprocessor. The ‘dark green’ colour in the chart denotes ‘pure material’, which is the ideal. Commercial conditions always apply for each delivery, and it is good practice to send a ‘sample’ load to a new end user in order for them to provide useful feedback on its quality.

In the case of material from C&I Sources, contamination up to this level will typically only lead to a small price reduction (level 2), because the AD Plant would have the equipment to remove the contaminant.
